English Title: China CPI inflation grows less than expected in Sept; PPI hits 4-yr high 中文标题: 9月,中国消费物价指数的通胀增长率低于预期;消费物价指数高达4年 English Content: Investing.com-- Chinese consumer price index inflation grew less than expected in September as holiday spending offered only mild support to local prices, while producer inflation soared to an over four-year high. CPI grew 0.9% year-on-year in September, government data showed on Wednesday. The print was just below expectations of 1.0% and grew slightly from the 0.8% increase seen in the prior month. CPI grew 0.2% month-on-month against expectations for a 0.3% increase. The September pickup in CPI was driven chiefly by increased spending during the autumn festival holiday. But government data released last week showed spending remained mild, as a real estate slump, weak wages, and sluggish employment all weighed heavily on consumer spending. Chinese producer price index inflation, however, surged to its highest level since June 2022, as business spending remained strong and as input costs rose due to artificial intelligence-driven demand and disruptions stemming from the Middle East war. Our AI's list of investor-grade stock picks for October just dropped » PPI grew 5.0% year-on-year in September, much more than expectations of 4.4% and accelerating sharply from the 3.8% print seen in August. PPI has risen steadily this year, helping break China's multi-year deflationary streak as surging global demand for computing equipment spurred sharp price increases in their related components. Rising raw material costs, due to disruptions stemming from the Middle East, also drove up factory gate prices. "With little sign that tensions in the Middle East are easing, inflation is likely to remain elevated for the time being," Capital Economics analysts said in a note. "But we expect the external price shock to eventually fade, with factory-gate prices returning to deflation and consumer price inflation falling back to an average of just 0.4% next year," they added. China has been grappling with a pronounced drop in inflation since the COVID-19 pandemic of the early 2020's. Consumer demand has largely failed to pick up despite continued stimulus measures from Beijing. The Communist Party is expected to outline more economic support during a key meeting scheduled for later in October.
